Click for event thread. Hi guys, new guy reporting in. I know this is a 4WD forum, but I hear the transmission experts lurk here. I have a 94 2wd 5spd 22re pickup, which I am turbocharging. It currently should have a WE trans. With my current bellhousing, is the W58 a direct swap? Are the shafts the same length? Do I need to swap my W56 tail housing on the W58?
Thanks guys! I'm not much help, but the 2wd version of the w56 is actually the w55 in most cases. Being a 4wd forum I don't think you'll find lots of info on swapping a w58, but I know there's a 2wd forum out there with lots of knowlege and it may hold your answer.

Yes, you can use the w56 bell housing with the w58 transmission. I did this with my 84 2wd pick up that had a 4spd "w" series trans which did not have a removable bell housing. The bell housings interchange on almost all "w"series transmission. I had to make new hole in floor board for shifter and had to modify the crossmember to trans mount location as well. I believe the spline counts are the same for input shaft and output shafts so clutch and driveshaft should interchange.
I don't think you will have to change driveshaft lengths since both trans are 5spd. You shouldn't have to change tail shafts. The one problem I did have was that the speedometer was way off. I'm not sure if there is a speedo gear you can change out to correct it. I hope this helps you.So I think my 1990 Toyota pickup has a '91 Toyota Supra transmission in it... W58 disassembly tips

Didn't want to start a new topic for this question Can a W58 gearset from a Supra fit into a W56 pickup case? Slightly related question. Anyone know if the 5th gear pair from a W58 can be put into a W56? This would allow the shorter ratios for down low but have a tall 5th gear to help lower highway cruising RPM. I have been eyeing the Supra 5 speed conversion offered in the marketplace. I know that W58s are easier to find in the US, but I note that the W55 has numerically higher ratios, possibly better for the Would anyone who has converted to either box like to share some insight as to how s he likes the ratios and make a recomendation as to which box to look for?

NOTE there are 5sp close ratio boxes available on request as well! At that speed my 2. So shift to the W58 5th and it will drop almost rpm which is then still rpm the W55 might be a better choice for you, but it all depends on your engine and your driving. Good luck.

The W58 is almost identical to the JH 4sp 2nd, 3rd, and of course 4th gear ratios. Ironicly, the JH4sp 1st gear is taller than the W The W58 has a fairly tall 0. For a bone-stockthe W55's 0. The best of both worlds is the W57 used in the Lotus Excel. Judson, the Lotus Excel was equipped with the W58, not the W My W58 came from a Lotus excel including bellhousing and all. Mitch's URL and its data is correct. If i can shift to 5th around 65mph and 70mph then i'd VERY happy as rpm will drop to around rpm or even below.
At this speed the 5th gear of the W58 is ideal. I think if your speed limit is 60 or 65 mph which i think it is in the US then the W57 5th gear would be more ideal, cause the W58 5th will drop around rpm or even lower correct? Fuel Stuff Intro Tech Board stuff.Remember Me?

Join Date Jun Location v isl Posts 4, First off, some tiny differences in gear ratios aren't going to give you that 'back of your seat acceleration feeling'. Hell, an intake, header, exhaust won't really do that. W58's are available, there's plenty of dead celicas and supras in junkyards.
If you can't find one going with a 56 isn't the end of the world. They are a bit heavier and the shifter position isn't as ideal. Not really sure why you want to use an 8" rearend in there, it will look goofy with 6 bolt wheels n whatnot. I have a complete drum to drum 7. BentMafk Films On Facebook. I appreciate the help. Posts 7, What makes the W56 heavier Dug? What 18R stuff are you looking for? I have some complete heads and an 18RC block to go with them. I believe i have enough parts to build 1. I am looking to sell. Also, i have a W56 in my 1UZ corolla with a 3.

Basically, Toyota gearboxes are renound for strength as well as reliabilty, ratio selection and affordability.
I have seen and heard many questions regarding differences between the boxes etc. Having recently switched to a toyota box myself I decided to find out as much as I could.
The Spilt-Case alloy 5 speed. Found behind any 2T or 3T toyota engine. Strong and light but not up to really high power 4 cylinders. Great behind crossflow escorts and anglias, datsuns and MG's etc Gear ratios: 1st 3. The Steel Case Celica box. Very strong but heavy 45kgs. Can handle anything up to around hp. Found behind all 2 litre Celicas and old Crowns, Cressidas and Coronas. First gear ratios vary: 3.
All have the same 0. Alloy Case Supra box. Very strong and light also, 35kgs.Roblox gear codes melee
Found in most later model RWD Toyotas. Can handle upto and beyond hp. Four different sorts: W55, W57, W58 and W Ratios: W 1st 3. W 1st 3. R, pictured below. Very, very strong box. About 45kgs. Known to be able of withstanding up to hp. Ratios: 1st 3. Toyota boxes don't seem to have many distinguishable markings on them. The real only way to know is to check the ratios, especially with the Steel Case box.

Some people say that if the sandwich plate on the Alloy Case Supra box is cast steel then it is a W58 and if it's alloy then its a W But this is not always true. However it is a good thing to look for, easily seen as the cast steel sandwich plate is darker. Word on the street is these are the strongest W boxes as the cast cannot flex as much as alloy can.
The R appears similar to the W boxes, but it's quite different. Apart from the obvious extra wide body. The R also has four horizontal ribs along the side of the case whilst the W58 also has three. The only true way to know which set of ratios you have is to count them. Count the splines at the output shaft of the box. Put in gear, not 4th cos thats alwaysbut one of the others.Log in or Sign up. Toyota Minis. Alright guys I need some help. I wanna swap out the w 55 in my 89 for asupra w I tried searching for some info but didn't come up with much?
I plan on getting a custom drive shaft made, So my question is has anybody done this before? And is there a write up on how to do this? As well as what do I need to do this swap? So far I know I need: W58 trans custom driveshaft to mate the w58 to 7.
Appreciate the help guys. Kristian43Dec 28, No custom driveshaft needed your stock one will work. All you have to do is swap bellhousings and go with it. I've put a 82 celica w58 in a 3rz T that had a w59 and i had to change the speed sensor out of the rear case but it was a direct swap. I've also swapped out a 4 speed for a w58 in a truck. You may have some shifter location issues but not a big deal.
I did the swap in my Swap the bellhousing, speed sensor and reverse switch and done. While your in there a lightweight flywheel would be good. Okay so let me get this straight.
I can reuse my drive shaft without modification? I also Already have a lightweight flywheel Is the 22re flywheel the same diameter as the w58 clutch? And does the w58 mount to the stock w55 transmission mount without trouble?Below find a parts illustration for the Toyota W55, W56 and W58 5 speed manual transmission.
