Click for event thread. Hi guys, new guy reporting in. I know this is a 4WD forum, but I hear the transmission experts lurk here. I have a 94 2wd 5spd 22re pickup, which I am turbocharging. It currently should have a WE trans. With my current bellhousing, is the W58 a direct swap? Are the shafts the same length? Do I need to swap my W56 tail housing on the W58?

Thanks guys! I'm not much help, but the 2wd version of the w56 is actually the w55 in most cases. Being a 4wd forum I don't think you'll find lots of info on swapping a w58, but I know there's a 2wd forum out there with lots of knowlege and it may hold your answer.

Yes, you can use the w56 bell housing with the w58 transmission. I did this with my 84 2wd pick up that had a 4spd "w" series trans which did not have a removable bell housing. The bell housings interchange on almost all "w"series transmission. I had to make new hole in floor board for shifter and had to modify the crossmember to trans mount location as well. I believe the spline counts are the same for input shaft and output shafts so clutch and driveshaft should interchange.

I don't think you will have to change driveshaft lengths since both trans are 5spd. You shouldn't have to change tail shafts. The one problem I did have was that the speedometer was way off. I'm not sure if there is a speedo gear you can change out to correct it. I hope this helps you.

The Spilt-Case alloy 5 speed. Found behind any 2T or 3T toyota engine. Strong and light but not up to really high power 4 cylinders. Great behind crossflow escorts and anglias, datsuns and MG's etc Gear ratios: 1st 3. The Steel Case Celica box. Very strong but heavy 45kgs. Can handle anything up to around hp. Found behind all 2 litre Celicas and old Crowns, Cressidas and Coronas. First gear ratios vary: 3.

Appreciate the help guys. Kristian43Dec 28, No custom driveshaft needed your stock one will work. All you have to do is swap bellhousings and go with it. I've put a 82 celica w58 in a 3rz T that had a w59 and i had to change the speed sensor out of the rear case but it was a direct swap. I've also swapped out a 4 speed for a w58 in a truck. You may have some shifter location issues but not a big deal.

I did the swap in my Swap the bellhousing,speed sensor and reverse switch and done. While your in there a lightweight flywheel would be good. Okay so let me get this straight.
